How to Use CashMate App: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Written by CashMate Team
CashMate is built to be simple. But if you’ve never used a personal finance app before, even simple can feel unfamiliar. This guide walks you through the app from the very beginning, so you can start tracking with confidence.
What CashMate Does (and Doesn’t Do)
Before anything else, let’s be clear about what CashMate is:
It is: A personal finance app for tracking income and expenses, managing your budget, and understanding where your money goes.
It is not: A bank, a mobile money app, a lending platform, or anything that holds your actual money. It only holds your records of money, your data stays on your phone.
It does not collect your data. Nothing is sent to any server. Everything is local, private, and yours.
Step 1: Download and Open
Download CashMate on Android Download on iPhone
No account creation. No email. No password. Open the app, you’re ready.
Step 2: Set Up Your Categories
CashMate comes with default categories that cover most people’s needs: Food, Transport, Housing, Health, Entertainment, and more. You can customise these to match your actual life. Common additions for users in East Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia:
- Mobile Money Charges
- School Fees
- Family Support
- Mobile Data
- Market / Groceries
- Festival / Events
Set up categories that reflect your real spending before logging anything, it makes the data much more useful.
Step 3: Log Your First Expense (Now with 1-Tap & Swipe Repeat)
Every time you spend money, log it:
- Open CashMate and tap Expense on the top hero card (or the + button)
- Enter the amount, or tap one of your Recent Merchant chips to auto-fill the merchant, amount, category, and account in one tap
- Pick from your top-used category pills right below the Category selector
- Tap Save Transaction
Pro Tip — Repeat Today in 1 Swipe: For recurring daily purchases (like morning coffee or transit), simply swipe right on any past expense in your Activity feed to log it again for today in one tap.
Step 4: Switch Between Your 3 Financial Lenses
At the top of the Home screen, tap the lens pills on the hero card to switch views instantly:
- Safe to Spend: Shows how much of your monthly budget or income remains, plus your exact daily allowance (
per day · Xd left). - Total Wealth: Shows your combined balance across all wallets and bank accounts.
- Cashflow: Shows your net monthly cashflow (
Money InvsMoney Out) and savings rate percentage.
Step 5: Explore the Spending & Net Worth Analytics Hub
Open the Analytics tab to switch between two dedicated views:
- Spending: Interactive Category Pie Charts, cashflow trend bars, and a daily Spending Heatmap that highlights high-spend days.
- Net Worth: A 2×2 Financial Health Grid (
Total Assets,Total Debt,Total Liquidity,Credit Used) alongside your grouped accounts.
Step 6: Track Subscriptions & Build a 7-Day Streak
- Subscriptions & Free Trials: Add recurring monthly or yearly bills to get notified before free trials renew. When a bill is due, tap Log Paid on the subscription card to record the expense into your account ledger and advance the next billing date automatically.
- 7-Day Money Streaks: Tap the flame badge (
🔥) in the top bar to view your 7-day rolling streak calendar (M T W T F S S), complete your daily check-in, and level up your financial fitness.
Step 7: Enable Optional Encrypted Cloud Backup
CashMate works 100% offline by default. If you want to protect your ledger against phone loss or switch devices, go to Settings → Cloud Backup & Sync, verify your email with a 6-digit code, and enable AES-256 Encrypted Cloud Backup. You can restore your data anytime or permanently delete your cloud and local records in one tap.
Works Offline, Always
CashMate requires no internet. You can log expenses at a market with no signal, in a rural area, or during load-shedding. The app works exactly the same offline as online.
Common Questions
My data disappeared, what happened? CashMate stores data locally on your device. If you clear app data, uninstall, or change devices without a backup, data may be lost. Use the backup feature to protect your records.
Can I use it for multiple people (family/household)? Yes, create a shared expense category or simply use one device for household tracking, logging whoever’s spending.
Does it handle multiple currencies? You can track in any currency, just be consistent about which currency you’re entering amounts in.
CashMate is designed to remove every barrier to tracking. No internet needed. No bank account needed. No technical knowledge needed. Just open it and log what you spend.
