Anchoring Bias: How Marketers Manipulate Your Sense of Price
Written by Anil Poudyal
When you see a price tag that says ‘Was £150, Now Only £75’, your brain anchors to £150 as the objective reference point. You feel as though you have just ‘made’ £75 by buying the item.
In reality, the manufacturer never intended to sell that jacket for £150. The initial high number was deliberately engineered as an anchor to make the real retail price of £75 look like an irresistible steal.
The Psychology of Artificial Anchors
Marketers use anchors across every retail sector:
- The Restaurant Wine List: Placing a £120 bottle of champagne at the top of the menu makes the £42 reserve blend look modest and sensible.
- Tech Upgrade Pricing: Offering an entry-level smartphone with artificially low storage (64GB) makes the £120 jump to the 256GB model seem like a no-brainer.
- Supermarket Multi-Buys: ‘Buy 3 for £10’ anchors you to purchasing three items when you only needed one for £3.20.
| Retail Strategy | The Fabricated Anchor | The Actual Value | Net Consumer Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Friday ‘Discount' | 'RRP £499’ crossed out | Regular price was £299 all year; on sale for £285 | Customer overspends £285 on unplanned item |
| Multi-Tier SaaS Pricing | ’Enterprise Plan £200/mo’ | Basic £15/mo vs Pro £35/mo | Customer defaults to Pro assuming it is mid-tier value |
| Department Store Clothing | ’Original Price £89’ | Production cost was £9; quality is fast-fashion | Customer buys 3 items thinking they saved £150 |
The Intrinsic Value Formula
To strip away anchoring bias:
- Ignore the ‘Was’ Price Completely: Cover the crossed-out price with your thumb. Look only at the cash leaving your bank account.
- The Replacement Utility Test: If someone offered you that exact jacket or £75 in crisp twenty-pound notes, which one would you choose to take home? If you choose the cash, do not buy the item.
- Never Buy to ‘Save’: You never save money by spending it. If an item was £200 and you bought it on sale for £120, you didn’t save £80; you spent £120.
Enforce True Value with CashMate
As software engineer and creator Anil Poudyal notes, financial peace comes from systems that work reliably without external dependencies. CashMate ensures you stay within your real financial borders:
- Strict Budget Allocations: Your monthly clothing envelope has a fixed ceiling. Whether an item is 10% off or 70% off, it must fit inside your available balance.
- Zero Third-Party Deals: CashMate never serves discount affiliate links or promotional popups.
- Pure Offline Peace: Manage your money with clarity, focus, and total privacy.
